Virtual lecture series | "Migration and Asylum Politics in Times of Crisis" | Part 1

"The Importance of Human Rights on the EU's External Borders" | Lecturer: Catharina Ziebritzki | Max Planck Institute for Comparative Public Law and International Law (MPIL) Heidelberg

Pushbacks in the Spanish exclave of Melilla, EU hotspots on the Greek islands, border camps in Hungary, and the denial of humanitarian visas to people seeking protection from war zones. Doesn't all this violate the European Convention on Human Rights? The lecture analyzes the current case law of the European Court of Human Rights on asylum policy at the EU's external borders. The focus is on the question of the significance of human rights for the design of the EU external border.
