Profile
Within Art Theory & Curating at Zeppelin University we believe in the importance of a poietic understanding of visual culture. In our research, therefore, we explore both the concrete practices and the ideas and theories, which drive contemporary art. In parallel we seek to establish a close connection between theoretical analysis and curatorial work.
Following an interpretive approach, our team engages with artistic production from the early modern period up to the present. Methodologically, this implies a visual and experience-based analysis of artifacts in order to locate these critically in their respective discursive contexts. To make sense of these contexts, the social history of artistic practices is regarded as equally significant to an historic understanding of aesthetic theories; we are not only concerned with finished objects, but also with their methods and conditions of production and in questions of institutionalization. With this, we aim to reach an holistic understanding of artistic forms of knowledge and their respective social meanings.
We are engaged in fostering a close dialogue between research and teaching, which is why the team at the chair is involved closely in the university’s artsprogram and the Laboratory for Implicit and Artistic Knowledge (LIKWI).
The chair represents a creative science of arts, i.e. dealing with artistic practices takes place both in an operational and a theoretically and critically reflective way. Researching, analyzing, and curating are therefore closely linked. The chair also oversees the PhD training program of the Horizon 2020 Research & Innovation program FEINART - The Future of European Independent Art Spaces in a Period of Socially Engaged Art organized in cooperation with the Universities of Wolverhampton, Iceland and Edinburgh.

artsprogram
The artsprogram initiates specifically developed artistic interventions, performances, exhibitions, and discursive events. It provides a platform for diverse artistic activities and enables students to gain curatorial and artistic experiences. Self-initiated projects, such as exhibitions, performances, choir performances, and concerts will be accompanied by the artsprogram Team and supported by artists.
Center for Cultural Production
The current developments in the cultural sector show that traditional concepts of art and cultural production are reaching their limits: New players, a changed user behavior, and the demographic change are currently causing radical changes and thus require a new way of thinking. Therefore, the task is to position the arts in a new way in today´s society, and to develop new formats, practices, and distribution channels. The current issues discussed at the Center for Cultural Production thus address the structures, economies, and policies in which future curators, urban planners, festival organizers, general managers of theaters, and entrepreneurs in the cultural sector have to act.

Laboratory for Implicit and Artistic Knowledge (LIKWI)
The Laboratory for Implicit and Artistic Knowledge (LIKWI) is a research unit at Zeppelin University that analyses the results of the Creative Performance teaching format. Together with a network of partners from other universities, its purpose is to draw out and investigate the epistemological, aesthetic and pedagogical insights gained from this format. LIKWI is part of the Center for Cultural Production and some of the workshops are also held in cooperation with the Zeppelin University's artsprogram.
