Network Analysis and the Graph Paradigm for Data Storage and Access

Network Analysis is an emerging field, not only in media studies and sociology. With applications ranging from the analysis of social networks over the spread of disease, organisation analysis in companies (or terrorist groups), logistics or even the entanglements of financial institutions (or ecosystems), it can be a fruitful source of deep insight for almost any quantitative and qualitative researcher. But to store complexly interconnected data in tables, as in SQL-databases or spreadsheet applications as Excel, can obfuscate its nature. It leads to complicated data-models, and hinders the exploration of questions regarding its networked structures, causalities and correlations. This workshop introduces basic concepts of network analysis and the paradigm of storing and analysing data in a graph, using the graph database Neo4j.

Felix Victor Münch is a PhD Student in Media and Communication at QUT, Brisbane, Australia. With a B.Sc. in Physics (LMU, Munich, Germany), an M.A. in Journalism (LMU and German Journalist School, Munich, Germany) and work experience in online media brand communication as an online media concepter and strategist, his main fields of interest are network science methodologies and social media.
