ZEPPELIN Chair of Economic & Transport Policy

Profile

In modern economies, the importance of mobility, transport, and logistics for the realization of welfare profits, economic integration, and globalization, is being discussed more and more. Transport policy provides the central framework conditions for economic activities in the national and international sphere. Not only since the discussions concerning the gradual deterioration of transport infrastructures has this been discussed by politics, business, and society.

Headed by Professor Dr Alexander Eisenkopf, the ZEPPELIN Chair of Economic & Transport Policy addresses the central challenges in this area. The following have to be mentioned especially:

  • Transport Infrastructure: Designing the future transport infrastructure is one of the central determining factors in economic and growth policy. The research and consulting of Professor Eisenkopf focus on issues in planning and financing transport infrastructure. Especially the topics of financing and financing systems of infrastructure are again and again the focus of transport political discussions.

  • Regulation: Until the end of the 80s, the transport markets in Germany and Europe were regulated and sealed off. As part of the liberalization, senseless regulations were abandoned; yet at the same time there developed a need for novel, intelligent regulatory concepts for the industries now allowed to compete. Still, there is some controversy over the competition of the different modes of transport and possible distortions of competition.
  • Sustainability: The multifaceted term of sustainability is becoming increasing popular also in the area of transport policy. Many transport policy concepts focus on the sustainability of transport concepts. From an economic perspective, the question is always on suitable institutional and instrumental solutions to internalize externalities caused by transport.

These topical areas, given as examples, describe essential agendas of the ZEPPELIN Chair of Economic & Transport Policy. Additionally, general questions of economic policy, especially those from the area of regulatory policy, are addressed. The research projects headed by Professor Eisenkopf integrate the economic, ecological, technical, and planning aspects of these topical areas. In doing this, the ZEPPELIN Chair of Economic & Transport Policy cooperates closely with the Amadeus Center for Mobility Studies at Zeppelin University which is committed to the interdisciplinary, inter-sectoral, and international analysis of the framework conditions of innovative business models in the mobility sector. This cooperation corresponds to the mission of Zeppelin University that is committed to an integrative, interlinked, and multidisciplinary problem-solving approach.
