Empowering Data Spaces for Future Mobility - Exploring Organizational Roles
Published in the Journal of Telecommunications and the Digital Economy (JTDE)
By Jens Gessler, Hanspeter Rychlik and Wolfgang H. Schulz (Zeppelin University, Friedrichshafen)

Aim

The article examines how data spaces can be effectively designed to support future mobility services. The researchers build on the Gaia-X initiative, which focuses on sovereign and interoperable data exchange solutions. Particular attention is being paid to the organizational roles required in these data ecosystems to ensure the secure, efficient and sovereign exchange of mobility data.

Relevance
Data-based innovations are essential for the mobility of the future. Whether networking vehicle fleets, automated driving or digital services in transport - organizations everywhere are faced with the challenge of exchanging data securely yet flexibly. This publication shows how data spaces can serve as the basis for such collaborations without the individual providers losing sovereignty over their data.

Key findings

  • By using a structured definition of roles, data rooms can be set up and managed in a targeted manner.
  • The authors have identified 32 specific roles - divided into eight meta-roles - that take on technological and economic functions in the data space.
  • The study uses expert interviews and two specific use cases (autonomous driving and emergency corridors) to show how these roles interact in practice and what added value they create for innovative mobility services.
  • The results not only provide information on the technical implementation of data rooms, but also on aspects such as governance, business models and compliance.
