Friedrichshafen. Professor Dr. Ulf Papenfuß, holder of the Chair of Public Management & Public Policy at Zeppelin University (ZU), has been accepted as a member of the newly created Strategic Advisory Board of the "CEO of the Future" initiative. In the 13-member advisory board, the proven public management expert aims to provide new scientific impetus for the development of managers in the municipal sector.

"CEO of the Future" is a nationwide initiative for the municipal sector with the aim of attracting the best minds for the industry in order to successfully implement the upcoming turnaround issues. The core of the initiative is a cross-mentoring program: 30 top CEOs of German municipal utilities and municipal companies take on a mentoring role and prepare the next generation of managers for the challenges of top management through targeted personal development and the establishment of a strong professional network. The initiative was able to win the Prime Minister of Schleswig-Holstein, Daniel Günther (CDU), as patron.

Harald Christ, Chairman of Christ Capital, will chair the Strategic Advisory Board, which has now been formed to provide a compass and impetus. Andrea Nahles, Chairwoman of the Executive Board of the German Federal Employment Agency, is the Deputy Chairwoman. The Strategic Advisory Board works independently, pools practical knowledge from the municipal sector and evaluates it from a scientific and economic perspective. It prioritizes key turning points in the municipal economy, initiates specific projects and translates them into collaborations, pilot projects and interest group representation. The aim is to visibly strengthen the relevance, attractiveness and performance of the sector.

As a member of the Strategic Advisory Board, ZU professor and public management scientist Ulf Papenfuß would now also like to make a contribution to this. This fits in with his role as academic programme director of the Master's degree course in Public Management with the optional focus on municipal management or digitalization, in which students are optimally prepared for future issues and the transformation in the municipal sector and trained to become the "managers of tomorrow".

"Functioning services of general interest are democratic infrastructure and central to trust in the state. To achieve this, municipal companies need innovative and responsible leaders. I would like to contribute my research and expertise to the Strategic Advisory Board of the 'CEO of the Future' initiative, as the interaction between practice and science is particularly relevant in this context for evidence-based shaping of the future," explains Papenfuß.
