The Leadership Excellence Institute Zeppelin is pleased to announce a new publication. Dr. Thomas Pieper, Guest Researcher at LEIZ, has contributed a chapter to the volume “Kompass für den Wandel” (English: “Compass for Change”). The book, written in German, was published by oekom Verlag in 2025 and is edited by Timo von Wirth, Thomas Vogel, and Petra Jansen.

Dr. Thomas Pieper is the author of Chapter 15 titled “Transformative Skills for Sustainability and Governance in the Context of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) at Higher Education Institutions and Universities.” In his chapter, he explains why higher education institutions are key actors in sustainable development and how teaching, learning, and institutional frameworks can work together to enable meaningful change. He positions education for sustainable development as an approach that not only conveys knowledge but also strengthens the capacity for action.

The chapter focuses in particular on the following topics:

  • How teaching can be designed so that students develop orientation and competencies for addressing complex sustainability challenges.
  • Which conditions and structures are required at higher education institutions to anchor sustainability in the long term.
  • Why universities can act as drivers of regional transformation and what responsibilities arise from this role.

The volume is available Open Access and can be downloaded free of charge as a PDF on the publisher’s website:
