On May 14, 2025, the final event of the Gaia-X 4 Advanced Mobility Services (AMS) research project took place at the German Aerospace Center (DLR) in Braunschweig. The event was hosted by the DLR Institute of Transportation Systems, to whom we would like to express our special thanks for the organization.
The Gaia-X AMS project was part of the "Gaia-X 4 Future Mobility" initiative and investigated how mobility services can be realized in a data-sovereign, interoperable and economically viable manner with the help of federated data spaces. The aim was to link technological concepts with governance and business model approaches and thus create a sound basis for the data-based mobility of the future.
Scientific contribution of the CfM
Within the project consortium, the Center for Mobility Studies (CfM) at Zeppelin University was responsible for the development of an economic system architecture that serves as the basis for the design of decentralized mobility ecosystems. In addition, governance models to ensure trust and sovereignty in data exchange and a framework for the co-evolution of role and business models were developed - together with Fraunhofer IPK.
Jens Gessler, research associate at the CfM, presented the key project results and then moderated a high-profile discussion panel on the topic of "Operating companies for data spaces". The panel discussed:
Dr. Andreas Heindl (acatech, project management Mobility Data Space)
Rico Auerswald (Fraunhofer IVI)
Dr. Christoph Lange-Bever (Fraunhofer FIT / RWTH Aachen University)

Key findings and outlook
The project work clearly shows that the technological implementation of mobility services in federated data spaces works - now the task is to transfer these approaches to real operations and make them scalable. The focus here is on the following challenges in particular:
Scaling: technical feasibility must be transferred to large-scale, real-world applications.
Community building: Shared values and clear value propositions are essential to trigger network effects.
Simplification: Onboarding and operation must also be feasible for non-technical players such as SMEs or municipalities.
The CfM will not only integrate the knowledge gained in the project into academic teaching, but also use it as a basis for in-depth research questions relating to digital governance, the platform economy and mobility ecosystems.
