Friedrichshafen. Zeppelin University is one of the most recycling paper-friendly universities in Germany and came ninth in the Paper Atlas University Competition 2025 organized by the Initiative Pro Recycling Paper (IPR). This year, Julius-Maximilians-Universität Würzburg took the top spot as the "most recycled paper-friendly university". A total of 59 universities took part, which together achieved an average recycling paper quota of 71 percent.
In administration, Zeppelin University consistently uses 100 percent Blue Angel paper and also achieves this rate for its overall paper consumption. With this sustainable procurement, the university is making an important contribution to climate and resource protection. Last year, around 44,000 liters of water and more than 10,000 kilowatt hours of energy were saved compared to virgin fiber paper. This amount of water corresponds to the daily needs of 368 people. The energy saved would be enough to cover the annual electricity requirements of two three-person households.
Marc Gebauer, IPR spokesperson, emphasizes: "Zeppelin University is one of the pioneers in sustainable paper procurement. By using recycled paper with the Blue Angel, the university achieves concrete ecological savings and sets important impulses for other universities as an example of best practice."
Since 2008, the Paper Atlas has documented the paper consumption and recycled paper rates of German cities on an annual basis, as well as universities since 2016 and districts since 2018. Cooperation partners include the Federal Ministry for the Environment, the Federal Environment Agency, the German Association of Cities, the German Association of Towns and Municipalities, the German Association of Counties and the German University Association. In 2025, the Paper Atlas recorded both increased recycling paper rates and a new record level of participation: A total of 260 municipalities and universities took part.
