Friedrichshafen. Zeppelin University (ZU) has appointed Professor Dr. Mateusz Dolata to the Endowed Chair of Artificial Intelligence. The Polish-Swiss scientist is moving from the University of Zurich to Lake Constance and will research and teach at ZU on the effective use of artificial intelligence in collective decision-making processes. The chair, which is funded by ZF Friedrichshafen AG, is located in the Department of Political and Social Sciences.
"Zeppelin University already left a positive impression during my appointment presentation as a friendly, accessible university with a special charm. Even then, I observed a direct and cordial interaction between all members of the university and could immediately imagine being part of this community. At the same time, thanks to the close cooperation with ZF Friedrichshafen AG, the endowed chair offers a unique opportunity to accompany a large organization and its transformation from an academic perspective in the long term," says Mateusz Dolata, explaining his reasons for moving to ZU.
After graduating from high school in Leszno, Poland, Mateusz Dolata came to Germany to study. He initially studied for a Bachelor's degree in Computational Linguistics and Philosophy at the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg, followed by a Master's degree in Media Informatics at the Rheinisch-Westfälisch Technische Hochschule (RWTH) Aachen. For his doctorate, he moved to the University of Zurich in Switzerland. He completed his doctorate on the digital transformation of consulting practice at the Institute of Computer Science based there. His doctorate was followed by his habilitation at the same institute, in which he examined the emergence of new technologies from a socio-technical perspective and which he completed with the Venia Legendi. Mateusz Dolata's articles have been published in renowned journals and he has received several awards for his papers at international conferences. He has been a visiting researcher at the University of Arizona and a lecturer at the University of Innsbruck. In addition to his work at the Endowed Chair of Artificial Intelligence at ZU, Mateusz Dolata remains scientifically connected to the Institute of Computer Science at the University of Zurich.
At the Endowed Chair for Artificial Intelligence, he will focus on how artificial intelligence can be effectively integrated into collective decision-making processes in order to make them more successful and human-centered. "Such systems can be used, for example, to facilitate citizen participation, which can ultimately be reflected in a higher quality and legitimacy of political decisions. In organizations, these systems can be used to make innovation or product development processes more effective," explains Dolata.
"Digitalization and therefore all facets of artificial intelligence are one of our key topics in research and teaching as well as in administration. The guiding principle of the Endowed Chair of Artificial Intelligence - to understand how artificial and human intelligence can complement each other on the one hand, and to design socio-technical systems that create social, economic and personal added value on the other - fits perfectly into our overall strategy," says ZU President Professor Dr. Klaus Mühlhahn. "We look forward to a mutually enriching collaboration with Mateusz Dolata and would like to thank ZF Friedrichshafen AG for its generous support."
