Trust in Data Spaces: CfM participation at the ICDEc 2025 in Tunis

05/16/2025

At the International Conference on the Digital Economy (ICDEC) 2025 in Tunis, our external PhD student Hanspeter Rychlik presented current research findings on the role of trust in data spaces. The paper entitled "Building Trust in Data Spaces: A Systematic Review of Perspectives, Definitions, and Mechanisms" examines how trust is conceptualized, defined and practically operationalized in scientific work on data spaces.

Based on a systematic literature review of 27 articles, the study shows that trust in data spaces is understood as a prerequisite, structural element and result of data-based collaboration. Five disciplinary perspectives - regulatory, technical, organizational, social and conceptual - shape the discussion, with formal and technical approaches dominating so far. The analysis also identifies key trust mechanisms, including governance frameworks, certification procedures, intermediaries, technical security solutions and architectures such as Gaia-X.

The research contributes to the theoretical foundation of the concept of trust in the context of digital ecosystems and underlines the need for interdisciplinary approaches that also include social and conceptual dimensions to a greater extent.

The article will be published in the Springer Lecture Notes in Information Systems and Organization (LNISO) series associated with the conference and will thus be made accessible to an international specialist audience.

In addition to his own presentation, Hanspeter Rychlik also took on the role of session chair for the "Social Media, Responsibility & Digital Leadership" session at ICDEC 2025. In this role, he led the discussions and moderated contributions from international researchers from Sweden, Morocco and Peru.
