Friedrichshafen. Professor Dr. Wolfgang H. Schulz, holder of the Chair of Mobility, Trade and Logistics and Head of the Center for Mobility Studies (CfM) at Zeppelin University (ZU), has been appointed for a second term as a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the German Center for Rail Transport Research (DZSF), which was created in 2021. The economist was appointed to the nine-member advisory board by the Federal Minister for Digital and Transport Affairs, Dr. Volker Wissing, and the President of the Federal Railway Authority, Stefan Dernbach, for his research focus on transport science.

Strengthening rail transport and shifting traffic to rail are important building blocks for achieving future climate targets. As an independent federal institute at the Federal Railway Authority, the DZSF has the task of strengthening rail transport in Germany through application-oriented research that contributes to the development of important innovations, their practical implementation and their use by the entire sector. The publication of research results as well as the organization of colloquia and symposia and participation in national and international conferences serve the transfer of knowledge.

The Scientific Advisory Board for Rail Transport Research supports and advises the DZSF in ensuring a high, internationally recognized scientific standard of its research work. The nine-member committee consists of renowned representatives from universities and research institutions who cover all of the DZSF's research fields with their specialist expertise. Together with the management of the DZSF, the Scientific Advisory Board is tasked with defining the medium and long-term direction of the research work and providing scientific impetus for the strategic and thematic development of the Federal Rail Research Program.

"Rail transport is a central backbone for sustainable and resilient mobility - in both passenger and freight transport. Continuous innovation, integrated system thinking and a reliable political framework are needed to fully develop its potential. The DZSF creates the conditions for strategically incorporating scientific expertise into transport policy decision-making. I look forward to contributing to the further development of this claim in my second term of office on the Advisory Board - with a clear focus on impact orientation, interdisciplinarity and the future viability of the railways," explains Schulz on the occasion of his reappointment and the constituent meeting of the newly composed Advisory Board. The mobility expert has been researching the fields of logistics, mobility and transport for more than 25 years. His current research focuses on the intermodal shift towards rail transport, autonomous and automated driving, artificial intelligence and new mobility concepts and solutions.
