The Science of Pro-Environmental Behavior Change

Widespread lifestyle changes are necessary to address climate change, biodiversity loss, and global environmental destruction. Pro-environmental behavior researchers aim to understand what can be done to systematically strengthen those human behaviors that benefit our natural environment. In this lecture, I will present two complementary approaches towards this goal. On the one hand, I will illustrate how the systematic experimental analysis of consequential behavior in laboratory and online studies can help understand the general principles that govern pro-environmental behavior. On the other hand, I will showcase a series of field experiments that translate these principles into practice by targeting specific everyday behaviors (e.g., food choices). In combination, these approaches can generate actionable insights for the promotion of pro-environmental behavior and the mitigation of environmental issues.
