Prof. Dr. Lorenz Narku Laing, Professor of Racism Research at the Evangelische Hochschule Bochum (EvH Bochum), was named "Top 40 under 40" in the Society category by Capital magazine. The jury honored him for his long-standing commitment to social justice and against racism and discrimination. At the award ceremony in Berlin, Prof. Laing discussed the democratic capacity to act in a polarized society with Alexander Dierks, President of the Saxon State Parliament.
"As a professor at a comparatively small university, I am particularly pleased to have been named one of Capital Magazine's 40 under 40. It shows once again the excellence that can also be found at universities of applied sciences in this country and underlines the special role of small scientific institutions in the university landscape," says Prof. Laing, who at 32 is one of the youngest professors ever and also holds the first professorship for racism research in Germany.
As a diversity expert, he has been supporting organizations in the public and private sector for over ten years in the form of training courses, keynotes and consultations. He also contributes his expertise to the presidential assembly of the Protestant Church Congress, the advisory board of the Bochum Center for Disability Studies and as a member of the Federal Government's Expert Council on Antiracism. He has previously been awarded the Zeppelin University Teaching Prize and the German Diversity Award for his work. "I have been educating, discussing, fighting, researching, advising and arguing for a non-discriminatory society for more than ten years," says Prof. Laing. "I have consciously brought my ideas and recommendations to all sectors of our society. Ultimately, freedom from discrimination is a task for society as a whole."
Capital Magazine is a German business magazine that has been honoring the leading young shapers of tomorrow's society every year since 2007. In the categories of management, business, politics and society, the 40 under 40 list honors the commitment and achievements of young leaders in Germany who work full-time and on a voluntary basis to find innovative solutions to major problems.
Another ZU alumna, Prof. Dr. Fabiola H. Gerpott, holder of the Chair of Human Resources Management at WHU - Otto Beisheim School of Management, was already voted onto the list of the "40 leading HR minds 2023" in Germany by Personalmagazin last year.
