2026-03-24

Friedrichshafen. The behavioral scientist Dr. Florian Lange has taken up the junior professorship for environmental psychology at Zeppelin University (ZU). Born in Hanover, he comes to Lake Constance from the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven in Belgium and will strengthen the Department of Political and Social Sciences in the future.

"In my previous studies, I have investigated, among other things, how effective interventions for environmentally friendly behavioral changes are in the laboratory and under realistic conditions. For example, I have conducted field experiments to reduce meat consumption or promote energy-saving behavior, often in cooperation with students," explains Lange. "I'm particularly looking forward to carrying out practical field studies with the dedicated students at Zeppelin University, in which we investigate how sustainable behavior can be promoted in everyday life."

Florian Lange, born and raised near Hanover, studied a Bachelor's and a Master's degree in Psychology at the Technical University of Braunschweig. He completed both degree programs with distinction. During his Master's degree, he was a research assistant at the Institute of Psychology at TU Braunschweig for many years and a visiting student researcher at the Department of Psychology at the University of Cambridge. After completing his master's degree, Florian Lange moved to Hannover Medical School as a doctoral student to complete his doctorate in the field of cognitive neuropsychology. He continued his scientific career as a postdoctoral researcher at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven. He worked there as a senior researcher until recently. Florian Lange has authored and co-authored more than 100 articles in scientific journals and is co-editor of the two journals Environmental Psychology Open and Global Environmental Psychology. In his research at ZU, Florian Lange also aims to combine approaches and findings from various areas of behavioral science in order to better understand environmentally relevant behaviors and decisions and to promote sustainable behavioral change.

"The psychology of human behavior plays a key role in the current and upcoming challenges associated with climate change and climate adaptation. More than ever, individual behavioral changes are needed to achieve greater sustainability. This is where our new behavioral scientist Florian Lange comes in with his research and teaching. There is no question that his expertise will enrich the research profile of our university with a further psychological perspective. We are therefore very much looking forward to working with him," says ZU President Professor Dr. Anja Achtziger.
