Prof Dr Hans Ulrich Gumbrecht von der Stanford University und der Hebrew University, Jerusalem hält einen Abendvortrag zum Thema „Von der Kritischen zur Künstlichen Intelligenz. Eine Erzählung von der Absorption des Bewusstseins?“.

Hans Ulrich Gumbrecht (Stanford University, Hebrew University, Jerusalem) ist emeritierter Professor für Komparatistik an der Stanford University und Gastprofessor für Literaturwissenschaften an der Zeppelin Universität. Zahlreiche Gastprofessuren führten Gumbrecht an Universitäten Nordamerikas, Europas, Lateinamerikas, Japans und Südafrikas sowie an das Collège de France (Paris). Er ist ständiger Gastprofessor an der Universität Montreal und an der Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales (Paris). Ehrenpromotionen empfing er an den Universitäten Montevideo (1999), Montreal (2004), Siegen (2007), St. Petersburg (2007), Greifswald (2008) und Marburg (2009).

Wenn wir heute von Künstlicher Intelligenz reden, so ist meist "singularity" gemeint – also eine in ihrer Selbst-Entwicklung von Menschen unabhängige Intelligenz, deren Leistungen menschliche Intelligenz überbieten. Diese Zukunftsvision löst gemeinhin Reflexe der menschlichen Kränkung und Leugnung aus – zu "singularity" soll es möglichst nicht kommen. Der Vortrag von Hans Ulrich Gumbrecht sucht nach einer weniger aufgeregten Version des Nachdenkens über das Verhältnis zwischen menschlicher und Künstlicher Intelligenz.

In the lecture Korsten will expand on what in Art as an interface of law and justice he defined as different kinds of logic operative in systems of law and realms of justice, and the role of art as an interface between the two. With regard to this, questions concern the relation between the idea of art as an interface and the autonomy of art, whether art can be straightforwardly used to achieve a certain goal, and how art can disrupt. These issues provoke again a fourth question, namely how art as an interface relates to time. If law, in its dependence on jurisprudence, relates to the past, justice is ‘always to come’. Here Korsten aims to answer the question of art’s relation to time by considering art’s potentiality to connect law and justice.

Frans-Willem Korsten is professor ‘Literature, Culture, and Law’ at the Leiden University Centre for the Arts in Society and professor 'Literature and society' at the Erasmus School of Philosophy. He was responsible for the NWO internationalization program ‘Precarity and Post-Autonomia: The Global Heritage’ and took part in a NWO/FWO funded program: ‘Imagineering Techniques in the Early Modern Period’. He currently takes part in a NWO funded program entitled ‘Playing Politics: Media Platforms, Making Worlds’. He published extensively on the Republican baroque, theatricality and sovereignty (A Dutch Republican Baroque; open access AUP), and the relation between literature, art, politics, justice and law – Art as an Interface of Law and Justice: Affirmation, Disturbance, Disruption (Hart, 2021) and Cultural Interactions: Conflict and Cooperation (AUP, 2022).

Die Einbettung der Menschen in die Natur, die wir selbst schon geändert haben, wäre die Einbettung in die gerade erreichte artifizielle Natur unserer längst getätigten Bearbeitung und Intervention. Das ist kein Referenzpunkt. Der Referenzpunkt unseres Verhältnisses zur Natur ist ihre fundamentale Produktivität, ihr evolutives Potential, das wir in Hinblick auf die Erhaltung beider Produktivitäten: der humanen wie der natürlichen, bedenken müssen.

Wenn die Natur eine Produktivität hat, die wir nur evolutiv-geschichtlich wahrnehmen, deren gegenwärtige wie zukünftige Potentiale wir aber entdecken können, sind wir – aus humanen Gründen der Selbsterhaltung – darauf angewiesen, ‚die Natur zu beschleunigen’ bzw. sie zu evozieren, das herzustellen, was beide erhält. ‚Nachhaltigkeit’ ist möglicherweise eine irrende Vokabel für diese Prozesse, wenn sie meint, damit die Natur so zu erhalten, wie sie gerade erscheint (in ihrem modus artificalis bisheriger kultureller Beeinflusstheit). Es geht um die Evokation des Wachstums der Natur. Das sehen einige als Katastrophe, während es für andere gerade die Weltrettung bedeutet. Das Geschichtstelos wird als Gleitflug zwischen den extrema starten.

Dr. Birger P. Priddat ist Seniorprofessor für Wirtschaft und Philosophie, Universität Witten/Herdecke und Zeppelin Universität, war über 30 Jahre Professor am Lehrstuhl für Ökonomie und Philosophie in Witten/Herdecke und zwischendurch Mitgründer der Zeppelin Universität (2003 - 2007). Zu seinen Forschungsschwerpunkten zählen: Wirtschaftsphilosophie, Institutionenökonomie, Politische Ökonomie, Theoriegeschichte der Ökonomie, digital economy.

Von Moholy-Nagy stammt das Diktum, dass Fotografieunkundige die Analphabeten der Zukunft sein werden. Doch was bedeutet es überhaupt Fotografie zu lesen? Welche Arten von Kompetenz sind gefordert und wie verschieben diese sich im Laufe der Zeiten?

Bernd Stiegler is Professor of Modern German Literature with a focus on 20th century literature in a media context at the University of Konstanz. His main areas of work are the history and theory of photography as well as German and French literature of the 19th and 20th centuries.

Mehr – messbare und vorstellbare – Gründe für ein (vielleicht oder wahrscheinlich) bevorstehendes „Ende der Welt“ als Ende menschlichen Lebens auf dem Planeten „Erde“ drängen sich heute auf als wohl zu irgendeinem vorherigen Zeitpunkt.
Die aus solchen Gründen erwachsenden Szenarien jedoch stellen wir uns im Rahmen und nach den inhärenten Logiken von historisch spezifischen Prämissen wie Formen des Denkens vor, die wir nicht gewählt haben. Auf diese Prämissen wie Formen des Denkens genau soll sich die Frage nach den „möglichen“ Welt-Enden konzentrieren – und visiert dabei eine Verschiebung von derzeit dominant „ethischen“ zu „ästhetischen“ Perspektiven an.

Hans Ulrich Gumbrecht ist emeritierter Professor für Komparatistik an der Stanford University und ZU-Gastprofessor für Literaturwissenschaft.

Ein Vortrag zu Fragen des Ausstellungsdesigns im Rahmen der Ausstellung „Der verstehende Blick – Fotografien von Pierre Bourdieu“ an der ZU

Der Raum einer Ausstellung ist eine Konstruktion. Sein Design bestimmt, wie darin Bedeutungen generiert, verschoben und gelegentlich unterlaufen werden. Der Vortrag geht diesen sozialen Aushandlungsprozessen anhand von drei klassischen Museumselementen nach.

Die Kooperative für Darstellungspolitik (Jesko Fezer, Anita Kaspar, Andreas Müller) beschäftigt sich mit der Erforschung der Repräsentation politischer und kultureller Anliegen und gestaltet Ausstellungsarchitekturen als diskursive Räume öffentlicher Auseinandersetzung. An der ZU konzipiert sie das Display für die Ausstellung „Der verstehende Blick – Fotografien von Pierre Bourdieu“, die einen der wichtigsten Soziologen der Nachkriegszeit und Begründer der visuellen Soziologie ins Zentrum stellt. Über ein halbes Jahr hinweg können in einem von den Berliner Designern entwickelten Archiv- und Werkraum aus einem Fundus von etwa 1000 Fotografien Themengruppen eruiert, zusammengestellt und in wechselnden Konstellationen gezeigt werden, die das Bourdieusche Habituskonzept, die weibliche Hexis, Formen der Verschleierung, die Entwicklung der ländlichen Regionen im Mittelmeerraum vor Augen führen.

Andreas Müller, Jesko Fezer und Anita Kaspar sind ehemalige Redakteure der Zeitschrift „An Architektur“, sie lehren Experimental Design, Urban Development und Exhibition Design an verschiedenen Universitäten und arbeiten seit 2008 in ihrem Studio für Ausstellungsdesign zusammen. Gemeinsam entwerfen sie Ausstellungen, vor allem im Kulturbereich. 2019 wurde von ihnen der künstlerische Beitrag zur Biennale Venedig im Deutschen Pavillon umgesetzt.

Ein Vortrag im Rahmen der Ausstellung „Der verstehende Blick – Fotografien von Pierre Bourdieu“ (10.10.2019 – 10.05.2020) an der ZU

Die Fotografien, die Pierre Bourdieu im Rahmen seiner ethnologischen und soziologischen Forschungsarbeiten während des Befreiungskrieges in Algerien gemacht hat, ermöglichen es uns, einen neuen Zugang zu seinem Blick auf die gesellschaftliche Welt zu gewinnen. Beim intensiven und ausgiebigen Gebrauch der Kamera ging es ihm um eine distanziert-reflexive Objektivierung sozialer Wirklichkeit und die Konversion seines Blicks auf sie. Bourdieus visuelle Soziologie ist trotz der globalen Ausstrahlung seiner Werke bis zum heutigen Tage weitgehend im Verborgenen verblieben. Das Gesamtkonvolut von mehr als Tausend fotografischen Zeugnissen, das an der ZU ab dem 10. Oktober erstmals vollständig öffentlich zugänglich gemacht wird, wartet noch auf eine angemessene Sichtung und Analyse.

Franz Schultheis ist seit 2019 als Seniorprofessor an der ZU tätig. Zur Person:
Promotion Universität Konstanz, Habilitation EHESS/Paris bei Pierre Bourdieu, Professuren sukzessive an den Universitäten Neuchâtel, Genf, St. Gallen. Als Seniorprofessor für Soziologie des Kunstfeldes und der Kreativwirtschaft ist er an der ZU tätig. Er ist Vizepräsident des Schweizer Wissenschaftsrats und Präsident der Stiftung Bourdieu. Der kreativ Tätige, allen voran der Künstler, inkarniert in unserer „Gesellschaft der Individuen“ (Elias 1991) auf geradezu idealtypische Weise den Anspruch auf Authentizität, Unverwechselbarkeit der Persönlichkeit und die stetige Arbeit an deren Verwirklichung und Vervollkommnung. Hiermit ist er gewissermaßen zu einem tonangebenden Leitbild für breite Bevölkerungsschichten, insbesondere die bildungsnahen neuen Mittelschichten, geworden. Seine charakteristische Distanz zur Normalität der alltäglichen Lebensführung beschert ihm ein aus dieser Außeralltäglichkeit und sozialen Distinktion erwachsendes Charisma und eine Noblesse der Erhabenheit über den vulgären Materialismus der kapitalistischen Rechenhaftigkeit und Geschäftigkeit, die schon als solche für viele Zeitgenoss_innen ein starkes Motiv für einen an diesem Modell orientierten biografischen Entwurf darstellen. Kehrseite der Medaille ist die schon sprichwörtliche Brotlosigkeit dieser gesellschaftlichen Existenz für viele ihrer Adept_innen: Die ostentative Distanz zur von ökonomischem Interesse getriebenen Markt- und Erwerbsgesellschaft geht einher mit dem verbreiteten Los sozioökonomischer Prekarität und Randständigkeit, mag beides auch noch so romantisch verklärt und euphemisiert sein.

In einer Zeit, in der Aktivität und Leistung alles bedeuten, da power naps und polyphasischer Schlaf die Nachtruhe optimieren sollen, Klartraumtechniken Ressourcen zur Verbesserung körperlicher und geistiger Effizienz kolonisieren, lässt sich – so scheint es – für die Müdigkeit kaum noch argumentieren. Das Sensorium für ihre Fülle ist durch all den Optimierungsdruck verkümmert. Der Imperativ des 24/7 hat es anästhesiert. Dabei geht es heute, so der Ansatz des Vortrags, mehr denn je darum, ihre besondere Aisthetik wiederzuentdecken, den Sinn für die ihr eigenen Zwischenzustände des Ungeformten und Nichtkategorisierbaren zu wecken.

Fabian Goppelsröder studierte Philosophie und Geschichte in Berlin und Paris und promovierte schließlich in Vergleichender Literaturwissenschaft an der Stanford University. Aktuell unterrichtet er im Doktoratsprogramm „Epistemologien ästhetischer Praktiken“ an der Zürcher Hochschule der Künste (ZHdK) und arbeitet in der Unternehmenskommunikation von studio aissllinger, Berlin.

In seinem Habilitationsprojekt "Post Publics" entwirft er eine praxeologische Öffentlichkeitstheorie. Auf Basis einer rationalen Rekonstruktion fachlicher einschlägiger Öffentlichkeitstheorien im Zusammenspiel mit Theorien gesellschaftlicher Entwicklungen (insb. Mediatisierung, Digitalisierung und Individualisierung) entwickelt er eine Öffentlichkeitstheorie, welche an alltäglichen Praktiken von Individuen ansetzt. Als analytisches Beispiel dienen ihm die auf Öffentlichkeit bezogenen Praktiken individueller Mitglieder des Maker Movements, die sich mit der Herstellung, Aneignung und Manipulation von Medientechnologie kritisch beschäftigen.

Dr. Martin R. Herbers ist PostDoc am Lehrstuhl für Allgemeine Medien- und Kommunikationswissenschaft. Er arbeitet zu den Themen des Wandels der Öffentlichkeit und der öffentlichen Kommunikation, der nicht-professionellen Medienproduktion und der Politischen Unterhaltung.

Philipp Kleinmichel studierte Philosophie, Kunst- und Medientheorie in Freiburg, Karlsruhe und New York. Er ist Absolvent des Independent Study Program am Whitney Museum of American Art und war Stipendiat der Akademie Schloss Solitude. Seit 2018 ist er wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter an der Zeppelin Universität und war zuvor Lehrbeauftragter u.a. an der Universität Gießen, der Universität Hamburg und der UDK Berlin. Er forscht zum Wandel von Kunst und Massenkultur im digitalen Zeitalter.

Dieter Mersch studierte Mathematik und Philosophie in Köln, Bochum, Darmstadt. 2004 wurde er Professor für Medientheorie und Medienwissenschaften an der Universität Potsdam. Seit 2013 ist er Leiter des Instituts für Theorie an der ZHdK Zürich. Dieter Mersch war Gastprofessor in Chicago, Budapest und Luzern, Fellow am IKKM Weimar und an der ZHdK Zürich. Seine Arbeitsschwerpunkte sind Medienphilosophie, Ästhetik und Kunsttheorie, Semiotik, Hermeneutik, Poststrukturalismus sowie Philosophie des Bildes und der Sprache. Seine jüngsten Arbeiten zielen auf die Begründung einer Epistemologie des Ästhetischen, die den Forschungsbegriff der Künste hin zu einem ‚anderen Wissen‘ verschiebt. Unter anderem verfasste er Schriften zum Problem der Repräsentation, zu Zeichnung und Diagrammatik, zur Logik des Bildlichen und der Philosophie der Musik, zu Sprache, Stimme und Kommunikation, zu Spiel und Computerspiel, zu Zufall und Kreativität.

Wie viel, wie wenig können, dürfen, sollen oder müssen Menschen wissen, um etwas zusammen zu machen? Welche Festigkeiten und Gelöstheiten von Zusammen gibt es, und inwiefern formt ein Zusammen sich durch das, wofür es in Anspruch genommen wird: durch Arbeit oder Nichtarbeit, politisches Handeln, künstlerische Performance? Und wie erforschen wir überhaupt das Zusammen – ausgehend von den Diskursen und den Imaginationen des Kollektiven, die sie unterhalten, oder von den materiellen Prozessen der Energie- und Informationsübertragung? Wo kommt beides zusammen, wo sind gerade die Ungereimtheiten und Widersprüche zwischen Vorstellungen und Kommunikationswirklichkeiten aufschlussreich? Anknüpfend an seine Forschungen zur „Kunst des Kollektiven“ möchte Kai van Eikels einige Vorschläge für eine Theorie kollektiver Praxis machen, die künstlerische, soziale und ökonomische Praktiken gleichermaßen einbezieht.

Kai van Eikels ist Philosoph, Theater- und Literaturwissenschaftler. Er arbeitet am Institut für Theaterwissenschaften der Freien Universität Berlin, war dort sechs Jahre im Sonderforschungsbereich ‚Kulturen des Performativen‘ tätig und leitet derzeit zusammen mit Gabriele Brandstetter das Forschungsprojekt ‚Synchronisierung körperlicher Eigenzeiten und choreographische Ästhetik‘. Seine Forschungsschwerpunkte sind Bewegungsorganisationen und Kollektivformen wie ‚Schwärme‘ oder ‚Smart Mobs‘, Kunst und Arbeit sowie die Organisation von Zeit.

In seiner Forschung verbindet van Eikels Organisationstheorie und ästhetische Theorie mit kulturwissenschaftlichen Fragestellungen. Dabei entwickelt er seine Theorien ausgehend von konkreten (sub-)kulturellen Praktiken wie dem ‚Jamming‘ oder dem ‚Sagging‘, um sie dann in einen künstlerischen, gesellschaftspolitischen oder ökonomischen Gesamtzusammenhang zu stellen und nach Kriterien des Zusammenlebens im 21. Jahrhundert zu befragen. Der Workshop bietet die Gelegenheit van Eikels Arbeitsansatz zu diskutieren und darüber hinaus in performance- und praxistheoretische Diskurse einzusteigen.

Im For­schungs­pro­jekt “Nach der Ka­ser­ne. Szeno­gra­fi­sche Ver­mitt­lungs­stra­te­gi­en für Bauen im Be­stand” be­glei­tet sie das Bau­vor­ha­ben der ZU und er­forscht dabei räum­li­che Kom­mu­ni­ka­ti­ons­stra­te­gi­en der Dar­stel­lung und Ver­mitt­lung von Bau- und Nut­zungs­ge­schich­te für das Fal­len­brun­nen Areal (ins­be­son­de­re das Mann­schafts­ge­bäu­de K5). An­ge­sichts der an­hal­ten­den Ent­wick­lung zu räum­li­chen Er­leb­nis­sen und der damit ein­her­ge­hen­den Ab­kehr von text­lich-li­nea­ren Ab­fol­gen kann die Szeno­gra­fie, mit ihrem Ver­ständ­nis von Raum, in­sze­na­to­ri­schen Kon­zep­ten und In­ter- und Trans­dis­zi­pli­na­ri­tät, mass­geb­lich dazu bei­tra­gen. Szeno­gra­fie kann als Stra­te­gie ver­wen­det wer­den, um die oft nicht mehr er­leb­ba­ren oder feh­len­den Er­in­ne­rungs­wer­te von Bau­ten wie­der­her­zu­stel­len und/oder wach zu hal­ten. Bau­ten sol­len nicht nur ihre ma­te­ri­el­len Spu­ren be­wah­ren, son­dern auch als le­ben­di­ge Ge­schichts- und Kul­tur­zeug­nis­se er­fahr­bar sein.

Chris­ti­ne Schranz ar­bei­tet als frei­schaf­fen­de Ge­stal­te­rin, Do­zie­ren­de und For­schen­de. Nach einem Erst­stu­di­um in Vi­su­el­ler Kom­mu­ni­ka­ti­on mit einer Wei­ter­bil­dung in Si­gnaletik und einer lang­jäh­ri­gen Be­rufs­pra­xis als Kom­mu­ni­ka­ti­ons­de­si­gne­rin folg­te ein Pro­mo­ti­ons­stu­di­um in Szeno­gra­fie mit einem Dop­pel­ab­schluss Dr. phil. und Mas­ter of Ad­van­ced Stu­dies in Szeno­gra­fie mit Schwer­punkt Raum. Zur Zeit ist sie Fel­low des Schwei­ze­ri­schen Na­tio­nal­fonds (SNF) an der Zep­pe­lin Uni­ver­si­tät. Ihr Ar­beits­schwer­punkt liegt in der Kom­mu­ni­ka­ti­on im Raum – der räum­li­chen Ver­mitt­lung von In­for­ma­tio­nen.

Den Küns­ten wird viel zu­ge­mu­tet. So wer­den etwa Al­li­an­zen zwi­schen Kunst­be­trieb und Öko­no­mie be­haup­tet: Kunst als Stand­ort­fak­tor oder als Motor der Krea­ti­v­in­dus­trie. Von an­de­rer Seite wird die Kunst po­li­tisch ver­stan­den, als Teil der Ge­stal­tung öf­fent­li­cher An­ge­le­gen­hei­ten oder als Avant­gar­de po­li­ti­scher Kri­tik. Dem ge­gen­über steht die Be­haup­tung, dass die Küns­te per se ge­sell­schaft­lich wich­tig sind und daher An­spruch auf An­er­ken­nung und Fi­nan­zie­rung haben.
Der Vor­trag geht davon aus, dass eine Funk­tio­na­li­sie­rung der Küns­te ihren spe­zi­fi­schen ge­sell­schaft­li­chen Leis­tun­gen wi­der­spricht, die in Er­war­tungs­trans­gres­si­on be­ste­hen, nicht in der Be­frie­di­gung – wie auch immer de­fi­nier­ter – Er­war­tun­gen.

Der Vor­trag dis­ku­tiert zwei The­sen. Die erste lau­tet, dass es die Funk­ti­on der Kunst ist, Wahr­neh­mungs­sach­ver­hal­te zu kom­mu­ni­zie­ren, das heißt die Dif­fe­renz von Kom­mu­ni­ka­ti­on und Be­wusst­sein auf eine spe­zi­fi­sche Art und Weise (mit Hilfe von Bil­dern, Tönen, Ges­ten) zu über­brü­cken und so al­ler­erst wahr­nehm­bar und kom­mu­ni­zier­bar zu ma­chen. Und die zwei­te These, dass durch die­sen in­hä­rent pro­ble­ma­ti­schen Bezug auf Kom­mu­ni­ka­ti­on und Wahr­neh­mung fik­ti­ve Wel­ten kon­stru­iert wer­den kön­nen, die auf ihrer Au­ßen­sei­te wirk­li­che Wel­ten nicht er­fahr­bar, aber vor­stell­bar ma­chen.

Für eine Kul­tur­ana­ly­se der durch elek­tro­ni­sche Kom­mu­ni­ka­ti­ons­netz­wer­ke be­stimm­ten „nächs­ten Ge­sell­schaft“ scheint es des­halb an der Zeit die epo­che­ma­chen­den Über­le­gun­gen von Ador­no und Hork­hei­mer nutz­bar zu ma­chen und gegen den Strich ihrer po­le­mi­schen Ab­sicht er­neut zu lesen.

It is 1968 and social psychologist Fernand Deligny has left Félix Guattari’s side at La Borde to work and live with autistics in the Monoblet area of the Cévennes. He describes it as “the network” - le réseau - and underscores that what he is facilitating is only an attempt. In French: tentative. Over the almost two thousand pages of writing Deligny leaves behind, the gesture of tentativeness called forth by this attempt at living otherwise is repeated on almost every page. Be careful, it seems to say. Don’t make this a method. Don’t harden this into a pedagogy. Don’t make it about what you already think you know.

In an ethos of the pragmatics of the useless Erin Manning‘s talk will endeavour to trace some of the inflections of Deligny’s 30-year project in the Cevènes, thinking at the same time about Edouard Glissant’s concept of errancy in the context of the being of relation.

Erin Manning is research chair in Speculative Pragmatism, Art and Pedagogy in the Faculty of Fine Arts at Concordia University. Recent books include The Being of Relation (forthcoming), Out of the Clear (2022) and For a Pragmatics of theUseless (2020) and Out of the Clear (forthcoming). In her art practice, she works at the intersection of the three ecologies - the environmental, the conceptual and the social - with an emphasis on the aesthetico-political.

For this event, Ukrainian artist Yulia Krivich will engage in an open conversation with FEINART researcher Gabor Ehrlich about the Russian imperialist war, the current illiberal turn and the consequences for her own artistic practice.

The focus of the conversation will be on the 'Sunflower' Cultural Community Center in Warsaw, a postartistic endeavour run by Ukrainian practitioners and their Polish allies with the support of the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw (MSN). Krivich, who is one of the co-founders, will explain the multitude of activities and networks around 'Sunflower'. The center was created to provide community-based (artistic, curatorial, pedagogical and activist) responses to the Russian war of aggression.

Furthermore, the talk will explore Krivich’s own artistic practice. It will highlight Krivich's involvement in postartistic collectives resisting the chauvinist cultural turn in Poland and address the role of interdependent art institutions in the struggle against the cultural hegemony of the far-right in Eastern Europe.

Yulia Krivich (Poland / Ukraine) is a visual artist, activist, and curator. Her practice is based on a postartistic approach and community-building activities. Krivich is a co-founder of the Solidarity Community Center 'Sunflower' in the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw as well as a member of the Soniakh Digest, a digital platform that researches contemporary info-wars and geopolitics from the perspective of Eastern Europe. She participated in numerous exhibitions in Ukraine, Poland, and internationally. In 2022 she was part in the Ukrainian program at Documenta 15. In her work, she explores issues related to language, migration, and postcolonial theory.

Gábor Erlich is an artist/activist and an early-stage researcher within FEINART who grew up in a working-class family in a small Hungarian village. He completed his MFA at the Intermedia Department of the Hungarian University of Fine Arts, Budapest. Erlich’s research, practice, as well as his activism are based on a Marxist approach to art and society

Dr Loraine Leeson will talk about some of the lessons learned through the span of her art practice that encompasses activist work from the 1970s/80s, projects with communities and young people in the 1990s, experiments with new technology and collectivity in the new millennium, and more recent engagement with older people and environmental issues.

Central to Leeson’s work have been processes of collaboration and participation that have lent cultural dimensions to activism and brought community-based knowledge into the public domain. She will discuss how early lessons learned from working alongside the trade union movement and the campaigning communities of London’s Docklands informed subsequent engagement with a range of groups, organisations and individuals, drawing on new technologies as they emerged to enable these voices to be heard. Lastly Leeson will indicate how these lessons now inform interdisciplinary research that draws on the arts to address issues of global significance.

Dr Loraine Leeson is a visual artist whose practice and research focus on the role of art in social and environmental change. She is particularly known for her work with East London communities from the Docklands Community Poster Project of the 1980s to the recent Active Energy with older people, which has received the RegenSW Arts and Green Energy award and the 2022 Times Higher Education award for Knowledge Exchange. Her monograph Art:Process:Changedraws on forty years of her work to identify methodologies for creative approaches to social transformation. She currently teaches and conducts research at Middlesex University, London.

Works of Socially Engaged Art are typically durational, sometimes in existence for years, but they are also ephemeral. This talk examines the politics of this ephemerality, and its relationship to the art institution and its institutional success that raises special problems, since it initially depended on a reworked conception of ‘relational’ or ‘dialogic’ aesthetics. In this influential framing, ‘art’ is normally posited as an ephemeral collective immediacy: the democratic energies found in spaces of encounter, collaboration and dialogue, and so on. This immediacy is profoundly enigmatic. It can be experienced, but it is not easily represented. It is collective but typically anti-institutional, although it is theorised using a term, ‘aesthetics’, which was once redolent of conservative tradition.

This talk explores the politics of ephemerality in relation to the project Gresham Wooden Horse, created by artist Isabel Lima with community stakeholders and residents of the neighbourhood of Gresham, Middlesbrough.

Kim Charnley is author of Sociopolitical Aesthetics: Art, Crisis and Neoliberalism (Bloomsbury, 2021) and lecturer at the Open University. He is a theorist and art historian who researches socially-engaged art, social practice, art activism and institutional critique. He is also a member of ‘Beyond the Now’, a platform that explores the role of socially-engaged art in a post-pandemic world.

Cultural policy is sometimes regarded as a largely technocratic preoccupation, which at worst, privileges well-meaning aspiration over decisive action. In spite of its progressive aspirations, it can equally be seen to operate more as a disciplining force within contemporary cultural production. In this lecture, artist Dr Ailbhe Murphy and Dr Áine O’Brien, Curator of Learning and Research at Counterpoint Arts in the UK, will discuss the intersections between policy and practice. Two experienced practitioners from the field of socially engaged art explore and discuss the contradictory dialogic of social practice and cultural policy through a series of international, comparative socially engaged art case studies. Drawing on those case studies, they will propose methodologies and tactics that usefully nurture a critical and generative dialogue between the cultural aspirations of policy and the politics of socially engaged practice.

Dr Ailbhe Murphy is a socially engaged artist based in Dublin. From 2015 to 2022 she was the Director of Create, the national development agency for collaborative arts in Ireland. At Create she was responsible for organisational strategy and programme which traversed research and learning initiatives, advocacy, professional development, commissions and project opportunities and included leading the EU funded Collaborative Arts Partnership Programme (CAPP 2014 – 2018). Ailbhe is also a co-founder of the interdisciplinary platform Vagabond Reviews, which combines socially engaged art and research practice where questions of agency, knowledge production, and representation are central.

Dr Áine O’Brien is Curator of Learning and Research and Co-Founder, Counterpoints Arts in London. She runs Learning Lab, a platform supporting cooperative (un)learning through socially engaged art (SEA). She directs the Summer School on Cultural Diversity and Collaborative Practice in partnership with “Create - National Development Agency for Collaborative Arts”. She co-edited Art, Migration and the Production of Radical Democratic Citizenship with Agnes Czajka. She is currently developing a series of international, place-based commissions engaging socially engaged artists, investigative journalists and digital activists with Beyond the Now - a syndicated social practice platform working across curation, commissioning, research and production.

In conversation with the feminist theorist, art historian and novelist Angela Dimitrakaki, Tomislav Medak introduces the work of the Pirate Care collective. Pirate Care is a transnational research project and a network of activists, scholars and practitioners who stand against the criminalization of solidarity and for a common care infrastructure. The name refers to initiatives that have emerged in opposition to neoliberal policies and paternalistic institutions that are denying basic care provisions to many. Pirate Care works on establishing infrastructures for self-organised, technologically-enabled care and creates solidarity networks.

Tomislav Medak holds a PhD is a researcher with a PhD on techno-politics and planetary environmental crisis. He is a member of the theory and publishing team of the Multimedia Institute/MAMA in Zagreb, a co-initiator of the Pirate Care project, and formerly an artist in the performing arts collective BADco.

Dr Angela Dimitrakaki is a member of the FEINART Scientific Committee, a Marxist feminist art historian whose research focuses on labour, social reproduction, ideology, the biopolitics of global capitalism and the formation of subjectivity in the 20th and 21 st centuries. She works at the University of Edinburgh.

In this talk I will examine the historical relationship between the automation of decision making, freedom, and democracy after the 1970’s. Through an examination of financial technologies, economic thought, urban planning, and aesthetic practices, I will examine how concepts of democracy and intelligence were transformed through novel technical practices and ideas. I do so to trace a historical genealogy of how freedom and democracy came to be linked to self-organizing, networked intelligences, and non-conscious decision making. Analogous to this development is also the shift to ideas of democracy and freedom as not averse too, but supported by, automatic and non-conscious decision making in both people and machines, what I label "the smartness mandate".

Orit Halpern is Full Professor and Chair of Digital Cultures and Societal Change at Technische Universität Dresden. Her work bridges the histories of science, computing, and cybernetics with design. She completed her Ph.D. at Harvard. She has held numerous visiting scholar positions including at the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science in Berlin, IKKM Weimar, and at Duke University. She is currently working on two projects. The first is a history of automation, intelligence, and freedom; the second project examines extreme infrastructures and the history of experimentation at planetary scales in design, science, and engineering.

Today we are witnessing a proliferation of autonomous schools, study groups, library collections, and art and performance spaces. Many of these schools and spaces are being created by artists, curators, and writers. These initiatives are symptomatic of illnesses that have beset formal educational and art institutions, and higher education systems everywhere. They could be said to be efforts to implement a transversal approach to art and study. But how can we guard against these schools and spaces inadvertently contributing to the art and knowledge production ecosystem, and indeed through their very energies and innovations adding value to these very same sick institutions in the process?

How can study maintain its antagonism to the institutions and systems that make study impossible? We would like to propose that one way to work on this problem is to think of study as occurring amid clusters and tangles of affordances. We take the word from the original work of JJ Thomas who was keen to find a more imminent relationship between ‘man’ and environment. Thomas was interested in the perception of objects as affordances, things that made things possible. But we will try to dispense with ‘man’ and most especially ‘the mind’ of man, in our application of the concept. In particular we want to suggest that what has been taken as the mind that perceives affordances is itself nothing but a shifting collection of affordances itself, and therefore also, not itself. We would like to think of study as happening amidst and as affordances as a way to prevent its capture and extraction by the knowledge and art production ecosystem. Can affordances help us stay transversal? Finally, we will turn to the question of the ethics of study under such conditions. We will enlist the help here Ximena Davila and Humberto Maturana on love and preservation.

This presentation will address the ongoing experience of The School of Engaged Art (Saint Petersburg), a project of the Chto Delat collective. The School of Engaged art was established in the fall of 2013 – 6 months before the annexation of Crimea and the outbreak of the war in the east of Ukraine, and ten years after the foundation of Chto Delat collective in 2003. It is a radical art education initiative with the goal of establishing a community of creative workers who use the language of art as a tool for transformation of society based on the values of justice and equality. The School was established to operate inside a Russian social and political situation where basic democratic freedoms are under threat, in conditions that offer no support whatsoever for critical culture, and in a society where there are almost no academic programmes in contemporary art. However, we did not expect that the situation after the inauguration of our school would escalate quickly to the situation of catastrophe – two years of pandemic, and then the outbreak of a full scale war create unprecedented challenges. What kind of art practice can we teach when the world falls apart?

The collective Chto Delat (What is to be done?) was founded in early 2003 in Saint Petersburg by a workgroup of artists, critics, philosophers, and writers with the goal of merging political theory, art, and activism. Their artistic activity is realized across a range of media—from video and theater plays, to radio programmes and murals—it includes art projects, seminars and public campaigns. The works of the collective are characterized by the use of alienation effect, surreal scenery, typicality rooted in case studies of concrete social and political struggles. In 2013, Chto Delat initiated an educational platform—School of Engaged Art in Petersburg– and they also run a space called Rosa’s House of Culture. From its inception, the collective has published regularly an English-Russian newspaper focused on the politicisation of Russian cultural situation, in dialogue with the international context. The collective’s work has been exhibited worldwide (in Athens, New Delhi, Shanghai, Mexico, Berlin, New York, Ljubljana, and London amongst others).

Discussing recent curatorial projects that bring values of mutual care to the fore, Helena Reckitt considers how they support Joan Tronto’s advocation of ‘caring with,’ based in “plurality, communication, trust and respect; solidarity” (Tronto, Caring Democracy, 2013). Reckitt takes a self-critical look at the values of competition, ambition and professionalism that shaped her previous working habits as an institutional curator to advocate for different curatorial approaches that embrace transparency, vulnerability, and co-dependence. By shifting attention away from public performances of radicalism and criticality towards under-valued, behind-the-scenes activities, she suggests that these endeavours are placeholders for less exploitative ways of working, producing, and coexisting.

Neither just artistic co-production – or the equivalent notions of participatory art and relational aesthetics – nor simple direct action, ART/COMMONS is a set of practices and reflections that resists capitalist commodification, but at the same time are not subsumed to the neoliberal logic of free gifts and of the frictionless and egalitarian “inoperative community”. In the talk he focuses especially on the Institute of Radical Imagination, a think-tank consisting of curators, artists, and scholars, involved in forms of research intervention for the transition into post-capitalism and at the threshold of Europe and the Mediterranean.

In this lecture, Viviana Checchia and Anna Santomauro will present a collective engaged curatorial practice beyond the usual schemes: situated but nomadic; responsive but not embedded; institutionalised but not normalised. This practice has been developed during the past 10 years within their intellectual and emotional Vessel, a nomadic research-led agency and curatorial organisation. Vessel is a platform for critical discussion surrounding the cultural, social, economic and political change created through community-based work, based in Puglia, Italy. Vessel has devoted great attention to the definition and development of socially-engaged art practice and contributed internationally through the application of socially-engaged tools and methods in contemporary curatorial practice, always from a perspective other than the mainstream. In this lecture the curators and co-founders of Vessel Viviana Checchia and Anna Santomauro will share some ideas and examples of how that was possible through public programming, commissioning and writing.

Let us think of instituting otherwise as a process of institution-making that unfolds through a succession of interconnected “instituent” events, engaging simultaneously with disruption and sustainability, proximity and distance, and movement and transition. This process presupposes solidarity with a community of cultural practices and forms of life which, driven by a deep disenchantment with the conditions of the collapsing world, holds the institution to account and pressures it to “always newly start again.” Such an art institution to come emerges at the transversal overlaps of art, embodied research, theory, lived experience, memory, fiction, and social action. With a focus on relations and coalitions, it strives to provide space and time for critical engagement with, and commitment to, one another through collective thinking, listening, imagining, learning, and doing. It restores the question of justice back into aesthetics, epistemology, and action. It seeks to peripheralize the western-modern (art) institutions and western-modern hegemony as such and engage humbly in conversation with other archives of knowledge, other thoughts, and other worlds.

The present, however, defutured by perpetual catastrophes of racial and extractivist capitalism, poses an additional set of challenges. If instituting otherwise is clearly less about institution than about creating conditions for how to be together otherwise, the task ahead is to envision and actualize the pathways toward another future. Could we, then, imagine the art institution as a community portal, an interstice, a tiny intervening space of rehearsal for moving between one world and the next, between the present and the not-yet? A porous gateway out of the “normal order of things,” can the portal disrupt the spatial and temporal politics of this “normalcy” to open a (momentary) possibility to leave its unfreedoms behind? Can it be place to mobilize yet unforeseen forms of encounters and otherwise improbable political subjectivities? What can be learned in such encounters - the instances of collective anticipatory learning for and of the not-yet? Which alternative imaginaries will emerge from such being together? And can they be not merely prefigured and rehearsed, but also lived, as if that were possible?

Speaking from within these aesthetico-political experimentations underway at BAK, basis voor actuele kunst, Utrecht, Maria Hlavajova will share tentative notes that issue from a collective, collaborative process and ongoing conversation within the BAK community. She will further draw on learnings from BAK’s ongoing research itinerary Propositions for Non-Fascist Living (2017 - ongoing), and in particular the project Trainings for the Not-Yet (2019 - 2020), co-convened with artist Jeanne van Heeswijk, as well as a continuing exchange with BAK’s 2020 Fellows.

In his lecture relating to feminist economies of contemporary art and recent examples of artistic activism, Kuba Szreder will argue that the critique of political economy of art is intimately related to a revision of its social ontology. In less academic terms, what art is depends on how, where, and by whom it is made, owned, distributed and used.

The art world of skyrocketing auction prices, art trophies, corporate museums, large biennales, and even larger artistic egos, is only a tip of the iceberg. It is an art world of the one percent, made in its image, and arranged for its benefit. But this playground for the rich is also an artistic factory, manned by throngs of precarious art workers. This art world of fluid assembly lines is operated by supposedly independent curators, individualistic artists and mobile freelancers. To stay in circulation they have to turn into entrepreneurs of themselves, becoming their own capitals, investments and means of production. Their cherished independence and youthful enthusiasm is underpinned by precarity, anxiety, and looming poverty.

The visibility of this ultra-competitive network can be misleading, as it overshadows a rich ecosystem of emergent art worlds. Beneath the tip of the artistic iceberg, art can be many things – a demonstration of painting, a drinks enterprise, a community garden, a toppled monument, a barricade made from mirrors, a trojan horse or a wind turbine. And this art is made by many –collectives of art workers and consortia of postartistic activists. Sometimes they aim at liberating existing institutions, pushing museums to become truly public rather than nominally so. At other occasions, out of need or want, they self-institute. Instead of expecting return of their current precarity, they shift from independence to interdependence, envisioning and enacting new collective modes of making, curating, and enjoying art.

The artistic life of places with weak or absent public infrastructures for arts and culture is possible largely due to the work of independent organisations. In Greece, the absence of a cultural infrastructure for decades, and the long-time financial and social crisis has made curating and running a non-profit space an almost clandestine operation; existing at the margins of the economy, self-initiating and imagining new forms of work and labour and alternative economies. 

However precarious the conditions, these entities manage to develop ways of building institutions, of researching, of curating, or creating and imagining spaces for thought. And although they entail underpaid labour, improvised technical solutions and a use of resources based on collective sharing, friendship and exchange of skills, they also enable an approach to thinking and operating that is emancipated from pressures relating to audience numbers, formal behaviours, and expectations of growth and expansion. This is what characterises the independent institutional landscape in which State of Concept was founded. iLiana Fokianaki will offer a reading into how these ways of operating within the curatorial context turn curating into instituting and will propose models for institutional languages that provide new routes in building innovative ways of connecting audiences and cultural practice.

Since the glo­bal fi­nan­ci­al crash of 2008, ar­tists have be­co­me in­cre­a­sin­gly en­ga­ged in a wide range of cul­tu­ral ac­tivism tar­ge­ted against ca­pi­ta­lism, po­li­ti­cal aut­ho­ri­ta­ria­nism, co­lo­ni­al le­ga­cies, gen­tri­fi­ca­ti­on, but also in op­po­si­ti­on to their own ex­ploi­ta­ti­on. They have also ab­sor­bed and re­flec­ted forms of pro­test wi­t­hin their art prac­tice its­elf. The Art of Ac­tivism and the Ac­tivism of Art maps, cri­ti­ques, ce­le­bra­tes and his­to­ri­ci­zes ac­tivist art, ex­plo­ring its cur­rent ur­gen­cy along­s­ide the pro­ces­ses which have given rise to ac­tivism by ar­tists, and ac­tivist forms of art.

In the frame of the FEINART lec­tu­re se­ries the aut­hor Gre­go­ry Sho­let­te ap­proa­ches his sub­ject from the unusu­al dual per­spec­tive of com­men­ta­tor (as scho­lar and wri­ter) and in­si­der (as ac­tivist ar­tist). Dr. Gre­go­ry Sho­let­te is a New York-ba­sed ar­tist, wri­ter, ac­tivist and cu­ra­tor Ima­gi­na­ry Ar­chi­ve: a pe­ri­pa­te­tic collec­tion of do­cu­ments spe­cu­la­ting on a past whose fu­ture never ar­ri­ved. Fear, resentment, and disgust are the negative emotions from which populist ideologies and authoritarianism emerge, as sociologist Eva Illouz argues in her recent book "The Emotional Life of Populism: How Fear, Disgust, Resentment, and Love Undermine Democracy". Particularly in the era of burgeoning right-wing populism, it is increasingly evident that these pathological feelings are not exterior to democracies. Instead, they permeate around socially-mobile contemporary democracies, eroding them from within. These sentiments thrive on the perceived loss of privilege and the specter of social decline. They shape individual identities and fabricated communities that derive claims of possession and perceived exceptional rights to specific social spheres and lifestyles from these adverse emotions—an occurrence philosopher Eva von Redecker terms "phantom posession" (Phantombesitz).

Consequently, could social mobility and the pledge of upward progression signify systemic flaws within Western democracies? Are they responsible for the social dysfunction emerging ever more prominently in the current historical framework across Europe and America? How do assurances of advancement, neo-authoritarianism, notions of property entitlement, racism, and sexism interconnect?What triggers the polarization dynamics that are currently also coming to light within social movements?

With its annual theme Being Wrong, the artsprogram will shed light on these questions in Fall Term 2023 as part of the symposium "Fear, Resentment, Division," which is part of an extensive program that also includes the exhibition Whiteface by Candice Breitz and a panel discussion with sociologist Eva Illouz.

The symposium, co-curated by students of Zeppelin University and held in German and English explores through lectures, talks, and workshops, the sentiments, practices, and imagery that underlie populist thought and authoritarianism and provoke violent social divisions. Contributors are philosopher Eva von Redecker, artist Candice Breitz, writer Asal Dardan and curator Maria Hlavajova.

Based on Anna and Lawrence Halprins workshops in the 1960ies and on A Model of Possible Action: An Experiment to Develop a New Methodology of Institutional Cooperation (Rogaland Kunstsenter, Norway, 2013) by the Austrian artist duo Krüger & Pardeller, I propose to discuss popular concepts of cooperation in contemporary art, which aim not only at a symbolic, but also at a material redesign of institutional infrastructures. In cooperation with an organizational consultant, an art historian and a museum director supervising the project, Doris Krüger and Walter Pardeller formed a temporary team that had set itself the task of testing new areas of competence beyond the traditional division of labor. Oscillating between a real workshops and staged rehearsals the examples demonstrate live-research into the organization and/or anticipation of optional actions resp. of optional life and work forms in the frame of post-disciplinary society. In addition to a replacement of the artwork by the performance of practices and working processes the de-differentiation of aesthetic and discursive activities, of autonomous and heteronomous labor is just as much a topic as the overlapping of collective self-organization and neoliberal self-management.

Concept

A Field of Where, What, When is a two-day conference of international arts and cultural practitioners, hosted by Zeppelin University on March 8 and 9. The conference focuses on how artists, architects and designers work in their respective localities, and explores themes of land, place-(un)making and community-building for social, political and ecological change.

Friedrichshafen, as a city constituted primarily through the two key sectors of industrial manufacturing and agricultural production, is a key site for this discussion. What is possible in this locality of industrial history and production? What are the tensions and what strategies might we leverage or learn from each other to negotiate them? The cultural and collective living initiative Die Blaue Blume e.V offers an important example of how urban architecture and spatial intervention can foster new use, community and a sense of place.

The conference A Field brings Die Blaue Blume e.V. together with five international collectives and artists, to discuss how they work locally, the kinds of knowledges and pedagogies they use, the new uses of land they draw on, and the idea of the south as a shared horizon. These are, alongside Die Blaue Blume e.V., Mirwan Andan and Iswanto Hartono (ruangrupa), Ernesto Oroza (Azimuts, Cycle Design & Research at St. Etienne), Jakob Wirth (Make-Up e.V., Operation Himmelblick), Louise Hobson (SWAY) and Unnar Örn Audarson (South Iceland Biennale).

Each artist will lead an internal workshop for each other and invited ZU staff and stakeholders on March 8 about their methods of intervening and contributing to the localities they work in. These will include conversations on artistic strategies for creating communities, architectural approaches to existing sites, reflections on ecological and project sustainability and more. The workshops are aimed at skill-sharing between academics, artists, architects, and cultural workers.

Alongside these internal workshops, each artist will give a public talk about their practices and projects at Zeppelin University on March 9. This day is aimed at fostering conversation around innovative contemporary cultural uses of land, and positioning the city, with Die Blaue Blume e.V., as a generative example of this.

One of the simplest tools we have is a pencil. With a pencil we can redraw and reorganise the way people see things. The Centre for Plausible Economies (CPE) applies this way of thinking to reimagine and reshape economic systems, in contemporary art and beyond. In the public talk curator and researcher Kuba Szreder will introduce the work of the CPE by discussing the visual essay Icebergian Economies of Contemporary Art, exhibited in the White Box of Zeppelin University. The workshop hosted by Kuba Szreder and Kathrin Böhm will provide an opportunity to map the everyday economies of contemporary art, visualising the diversity of economic systems that typically underpin artistic practice. The aim of the exercise is to nourish interdependent and community-based approaches to artistic economies.

The workshops will focus on the diverse economies of the collectives, projects and institutions, in which workshop participants are enmeshed. The redrawing exercises will move beyond the capitalocentric visions of economy, to map the diverse economies of contemporary art. The diagrams and images with encompass both symbolic and material values, monetary and non-monetary resources generated in artistic ecosystems. They will manifest the values engendered by the mapped initiatives, situating them in wider social context. The workshop participants will address the aftermath of the pandemic, the ongoing economic crisis and looming austerity, considering how to cope with its negative impact.

On the 22nd of October the artsprogram of Zeppelin University is inviting to a public talk and workshop with the Institute of Radical Imagination (IRI), an alter-institution operating on the threshold between art, radical pedagogy and activism, with the aim of imagining, and implementing practices of solidarity and commoning across Europe and the Mediterranean. As part of the interdisciplinary programme Weaving Dreams into Realities, IRI members Massimiliano Mollona, who is an Italian anthropologist, curator and author of the book Art/Commons, Turkish activist and artist Zeyno Pekünlü and internationally renowned Russian artist and activist Dmitry Vilensky will host a public talk and workshop, in which they will introduce the work of the Institute of Radical Imagination, invite the public to reflect on the political potential of dreams and imaginaries, and encourage a conversation on international solidarity in times of global conflicts and authoritarianism.

The Summer School invites researchers, curators, practitioners, artists and advanced students at the Master level and PhD candidates to participate in two days of intense discussions and exchange. During this two-day event, developments and theoretical approaches emerging around Socially Engaged Art will be discussed and reconsidered.

In times of multiple planetary crises, it is essential to fundamentally re-explore the human relationship to the world and to gain a new understanding of the human/non-human condition. Worldwide there is a growing need for places of alternative theoretical and practical work where new epistemes, new forms of living together in solidarity and new social infrastructures can be explored. Facing these developments, artistic practice also takes on a new role. Building on Socially Engaged Art practices, new alliances beyond the field of art have emerged; economists, anthropologists, sociologists, and artists collaborate in search of self-determined forms of coexistence and modes of collective production and engage with practices of care, new commons, interdependence, and radical imagination.

Against this backdrop, theorists, artists and experts from Africa, Asia and Europe will shed light on recent theoretical and institutional developments and explore the role of socially and politically intervening art in times of climate emergency, dangerous geopolitical shifts, and mass migration. The focus will be on questions of institutionalisation and forms of organisation, experimentation and knowledge production in Socially Engaged Art.

Das Symposium zu »Ökologien des Menschlichen« versucht zum Abschluss der Ausstellung, die Frage nach den Möglichkeiten des Menschen nochmals zu stellen und dabei über den technischen Kontext hinauszugehen. Renommierte Kulturwissenschaftler und Soziologen diskutieren, was das Menschliche am Menschen ist.

Wie kann der Mensch als Mensch verstanden werden, und wie kann er unter Menschen leben? In welchen Umgebungen ist es möglich, Mensch zu sein? Was also ist das Milieu des Menschen, und was heißt es, wenn dieses Milieu sich erweitert oder wenn es sich einschränkt? Welche Grenzen muss der Mensch akzeptieren? Kann er sich erkennen, und kann er sich ertragen? Welches Bild macht sich der Mensch vom Menschlichen?

Im Rahmen des Symposiums "Freiheitsgrade: Mit Kunst an Universitäten forschen" soll die Diskussion über die Bedeutung und Möglichkeiten von Kunstprogrammen an Universitäten fortgesetzt werden. Hierbei soll es vor allem um die spezifischen Impulse gehen, die künstlerische Praxen dem universitären Betrieb liefern, wie auch um die Frage, welche Impulse – umgekehrt – für künstlerische Praxen vom universitären Umfeld ausgehen. Anhand von Kurzvorträgen zu unterschiedlichen Programmen (Residenzen, Projekte, Placements, usw.) dient das Symposium dazu herauszufinden, wie sich Schnittstellen zwischen künstlerischen und universitären – insbesondere wissenschaftlichen – Prozessen initiieren und gestalten lassen. Besondere Aufmerksamkeit soll dabei den derzeit viel diskutierten Konzepten der künstlerischen Forschung sowie der Ausbildung künstlerisch-kreativer Wissensformen gelten. Konferenz mit KünstlerInnen und TheoretikerInnen an der Zeppelin University in Friedrichshafen in Kooperation mit dem Kunstbüro der Kunststiftung Baden-Württemberg.

Die Veranstaltung „Kunstarbeit jenseits des Kunstmarktes“ zielt darauf ab, jene nicht kunstmarktkonformen Arbeitspraktiken und Netzwerke im Kunstfeld zu beleuchten, die sich in den Bereichen Stadtentwicklung, Forschung, Internet und Design herausgebildet haben. Diese Praktiken sollen auf ihr jeweiliges Selbstverständnis, ihre Organisationsstrukturen, Netzwerkbildungen und Ökonomien hin befragt werden. So wird diskutiert welche alternativen Märkte und Produktionsverhältnisse sich jenseits des Kunsthandels herausgebildet haben, welchen Logiken diese folgen und welchen Vereinnahmungen sie ausgesetzt sind.

Die Klage darüber, dass der Kunstmarkt zu der alles entscheidenden Bewertungsinstanz von Kunst avanciert sei, erscheint keineswegs neu. Doch trotz einer immer lauter werdenden Kritik am Markt-Imperativ haben sich bislang nur wenige institutionelle Strukturen im Kunstfeld gezielt darauf ausgerichtet, die Entfaltung alternativer künstlerischer Arbeitsweisen und Rollenmodelle zu unterstützen. Dabei ist schon länger von einem Wandel der Produktionsverhältnisse im Kunstfeld die Rede. KünstlerInnen gründen Netzwerke, Projekträume und engagieren sich in sozialen und politischen Initiativen, die nicht mehr den alten Zurechungslogiken des Kunstfeldes entsprechen. Auch werden die Grenzziehungen zu den Kreativ-Industrien zu anderen Formen immaterieller Arbeit und zur wissenschaftlichen Forschung derzeit neu verhandelt. Daneben hat sich das Internet als eine künstlerische Plattform mit einer eigenen Organisationslogik und Ökonomie herausgebildet. Dennoch stecken entsprechende Förderpraktiken und institutionelle Strategien, die eine Passung zu den besagten neuen künstlerischen Produktionsweisen aufweisen, bislang noch in den Anfängen. In ökonomischer Hinsicht gilt der Vertrieb von Exponaten durch private Galerien deshalb für KünstlerInnen nach wie vor als relativ alternativlose Einkommensquelle und Karrierestrategie. Auch Kunstakademien bereiten ihre Studierenden kaum darauf vor alternative Arbeitsprofile und Ökonomien zu entwickeln. Und selbst das Gros öffentlicher Förderprogramme ist nach wie vor darauf ausgerichtet, KünstlerInnen auf Kunstmarktkarrieren und in die entsprechenden Strukturen vorzubereiten. Aus diesem Grunde dient die geplante Veranstaltung einer Bestandsaufnahme und Reflexion alternativer Arbeitsmodelle im Kunstfeld.

Concerto21. ist der Meisterkurs für Musiker und Festivalmacher, die Konzerte neu denken wollen, die künstlerische Visionen haben und ihr Publikum ernst nehmen. Wir begeben uns auf die Suche nach dem Konzertereignis, das in unsere Zeit passt, das Leute in die Säle lockt, weil es berührt und begeistert, weil es klug ist und einen guten Abend verspricht. Dabei geht es nicht um eine banale ‚Eventisierung‘ des Konzerts, sondern um Änderungen im Detail, die aus dem vertrauten Ritual wieder eine Überraschung machen.

Concerto21. bietet den Teilnehmern die Möglichkeit, gemeinsam mit hochkarätigen Gesprächspartnern aus der Musikszene über zeitgemäße Konzertformate nachzudenken, neue Programmdramaturgien zu entwickeln und Stimmung(en) im Konzertsaal zu erzeugen. Die Teilnehmer lernen, ihr Publikum zu verstehen, sie erfahren, wie man Veranstalter überzeugt, wie man die Karriere strategisch plant, wie man die Neuen (und die alten) Medien optimal nutzt – und sie hinterfragen ihre Haltung als Künstler.

Since 2013, the Centre for Cultural Production and artsprogram have been organising an annual series of ten to twelve public lectures on a jointly developed annual theme. 

What could a university look like that does not consume itself, but is resolutely orientated towards a planetary future? How much Apollonian order does it need, how much Dionysian energy?

The annual theme of the artsprogram and the Centre for Cultural Production 2024 follows on from the predominantly pessimistic debates on the state of universities, in which they are described as ‘darkocracies’ (Peter Fleming), psychic hells or as places of white oppression. As part of the lecture series, we want to investigate these self-descriptions and their effects, shed light on the mechanisms of (self-)sabotage of critical thinking, but also discuss alternative educational formats.

In cooperation with the international multilingual street journal Arts of the Working Class, philosophers, sociologists, literary and art theorists will talk about films, music, literature, images, performances and everyday rituals in which an existential ‘Being Wrong’ becomes audible. The lecture series explores the question of whether we are living in a time in which all of our beliefs, practices, forms of knowledge, institutions and infrastructures are epistemically, practically and collectively unconsciously wrong and thus even transcendentally wrong?

Die öffentliche Ringvorlesung, die im Frühjahr 2020 beginnt, erörtert aus kunst- und kulturwissenschaftlicher Perspektive die historischen Ökonomien und Ordnungen der Sichtbarkeit. In diesem Rahmen werden Kunst- und KulturwissenschaftlerInnen den Zusammenhang von Macht, Herrschaft, Präsenz und Sichtbarkeit an beispielhaften Kunstwerken und -projekten zur Diskussion stellen. In zwölf Vorträgen wird das Spektrum dabei von der Antike bis zur Gegenwart reichen.

Die Ringvorlesung, die im Februar 2019 begann, ludt Kunsthistorikerinnen, Philosophen, Literaturwissenschaftlerinnen und Filmwissenschaftler ein Werke vorzustellen, die sich dezidiert mit dem Thema künstlerischer und politischer Freiheit befassten und durch eine historische und disziplinenübergreifende Perspektivierung unterschiedlichste Freiheitsbegriffe und -vorstellungen entfalteten.

A Day With...' is an opportunity to observe internationally renowned researchers for a day and the methods and instruments they use. The seminars and workshops are designed in a way that doctoral students, research assistants, master students and also advanced bachelor students (who can apply to participate) have the opportunity to get in direct contact with the researchers. One seminar, one workshop and one public lecture are offered. The format "A Day With..." is also used by some other outstanding universities as an extended colloquium format and is an academic highlight. ZU stands for bringing scientists closer to students not only through texts, but also personally and through dialogue.

„Stirbt das Theater, nur weil keiner mehr hingeht?“
Jedem ZU-Studierenden ist diese Frage aus dem Auswahlfragebogen vertraut. Wir diskutieren diese Frage endlich.

Das vom Fachbereich Kulturwissenschaften ausgerichtete Format „A Day with…“ hat, nach den Veranstaltungen der vergangenen Jahre mit Bruno Latour, Eva Illouz, Chantal Mouffe und anderen, in diesem Jahr einen herausragenden Vertreter der kulturmanagerialen Praxis eingeladen: Matthias Lilienthal (*1959) ist einer der profiliertesten deutschen Theatermacher, war Chefdramaturg unter Frank Castorf an der Berliner Volksbühne, dann langjähriger künstlerischer Leiter des Hebbel-Theaters in Berlin (2012 „Theater des Jahres“) und ist seit 2015 Intendant der Münchner Kammerspiele.

Er steht für neue und experimentelle Theaterformen und sieht das Theater nicht als elitären Raum, sondern als einen Ort, der die Themen einer Stadt aufgreift „und sie wieder in die Straßen zurückspielt“. Um das Verständnis des Theaters als „Labor zum Ausprobieren urbanen Lebensraums“ wird es auch an dem Tag mit ihm an der Zeppelin Universität gehen: in verschiedenen theatralischen Aktionen werden Studierende der Drama Society und anderer studentischer Initiativen unter seiner Anleitung (nach Art des X Wohnungen-Projekts) das Gebäude und die Umgegend des Fallenbrunnen-Campus durch kleine theatralische Performances für die Universität erschließen. Dabei sollen auch die militärische Vergangenheit des Geländes und ihre Spuren und Auswirkungen thematisiert werden. Alle Universitätsangehörigen und Nachbarn der ZU sind eingeladen, in Publikums- wie Akteursrollen an den gegen 12.00 Uhr startenden Aktionen teilzunehmen.

Die Belgierin Chantal Mouffe ist eine international gefragte Politische Theoretikerin, die an der Westminster University in London lehrt und in Paris lebt. Sie hat sich mit ihrem Konzept der „Agonistik" sowie durch ihre Auseinandersetzungen mit dem Wechselverhältnis von Kunst, Kultur und Politik international einen Namen gemacht. Ihr 2014 in der deutschen Übersetzung bei Suhrkamp erschienenes Buch “Agonistik. Die Welt politisch denken“ ist in der Wissenschaftswelt auf große Resonanz gestoßen. Hierin setzt sich Mouffe kritisch mit den gegenwärtigen Tendenzen der Postpolitik und der Protestbewegungen auseinander.

Thomas Macho ist seit 1993 Professor für Kulturgeschichte am Institut für Kulturwissenschaft der Humboldt-Universität Berlin. In seinen Forschungsschwerpunkten beschäftigt er sich mit der Geschichte der Kalender und Zeitrechnungen, mit der Geschichte der Rituale (Tod und Trauer), mit den kulturellen Beziehungen zwischen Menschen und Tieren (Human Animal Studies), sowie mit der Geschichte der Piktogramme.

Thomas Macho war im Wintersemester 2000/01 Senior Fellow am Internationalen Forschungszentrum Kulturwissenschaften Wien; 2001–2003 Sprecher der DFG-Forschergruppe »Bild – Schrift – Zahl«; 2001 Preisträger der Aby-Warburg-Stiftung Hamburg; 2004–2006 Sprecher des DFG-Graduiertenkollegs »Codierung von Gewalt im medialen Wandel«; 2006– 2008 Dekan der Philosophischen Fakultät III der Humboldt-Universität Berlin; seit 2007 Mitglied und seit 2010 Vorsitzender des Kuratoriums des Deutschen Hygiene-Museums Dresden; 2008–2012 assoziierter Ko-Direktor des Zentrums für Literatur- und Kulturforschung Berlin; 2008–2009 Fellow am Internationalen Kolleg für Kulturtechnikforschung und Medienphilosophie der Bauhaus-Universität Weimar; seit 2010 Mitglied der Europäischen Akademie der Wissenschaften und Künste; seit 2012 Vorsitzender des wissenschaftlichen Beirats des »Minerva-Center for Interdisciplinary Study of End of Life« an der Universität Tel Aviv; 2013– 2014 Fellow am Internationalen Kolleg »Morphomata – Genese, Dynamik und Medialität kultureller Figurationen« an der Universität Köln.

Von Fall zu Fall: Methodische Überlegungen zu einer konsiliarischen Kasuistik

Der Vortrag diskutiert drei Schwerpunkte: die Geschichte der Beratung als Wissenschaft, die Bedeutung wissenschaftlicher Narrationen sowie die methodologischen Implikationen des neuzeitlichen Aufstiegs der Fallgeschichte – von den »Acta Sanctorum« und Pitavals »Causes célèbres et intéressantes« bis zu den Fallgeschichten der Medizin, Psychologie und Kulturanthropologie.

Eva Illouz, Professorin für Soziologie an der Hebrew University in Jerusalem, wurde 2009 von der Wochenzeitung „Die Zeit“ in der Reihe „Wer denkt für morgen?“ als eine von 12 Intellektuellen ausgemacht, denen man zutraut das Denken der Zukunft zu verändern. Mit ihren Bänden „Der Konsum der Romantik“ (engl. 1997), ihrem Frankfurter Adorno-Vorlesungen „Gefühle in Zeiten des Kapitalismus“ (2006) und ihrer Studie „Die Errettung der modernen Seele“ (engl. 2008) legte die 1961 in Marokko geborene Soziologin eine Reihe von erhellenden zeitdiagnostischen Analysen vor, die sich vor allem mit der Frage befassen, in welcher Beziehung Liebe und Gefühle „zur Kultur und den Klassenverhältnissen des Spätkapitalismus“ stehen.

Auf der Basis von Interviews und autobiographischen Erzählungen, der Analyse von Massenmedien, Werbebildern, Kinofilmen und Romanen wie auch im Rückgriff auf Ratgeberliteratur betreibt Illouz eine „Archäologie der Vermarktlichungsprozesse“ (Axel Honneth). Liebe, Emotionen und Konsum erweisen sich dabei nicht als Antagonismen oder zu separierende Sphären, vielmehr wird nachgezeichnet, wie Gefühle und ökonomischer Tausch einen für den spätmodernen Kapitalismus charakteristischen Konnex bilden. Konsum, so Illouz Diagnose, „setzt romantische Gefühle nicht herab, sondern verstärkt sie.“ Das hat Folgen für das Selbstverständnis des Subjekts bis hinein in die intimsten Bereiche. „Der homo oeconomicus hat emotional aufgerüstet, während das emotionale Subjekt ökonomisch verfährt“, sagt sie in einem Interview.

Im Rahmen des Formats „A Day With...", bei dem in den letzten Jahren Bruno Latour und Winfried Menninghaus an der ZU zu Gast waren, haben fortgeschrittene Studierende und Promovierende die Möglichkeit, Einblicke in die Forschungspraxis von herausragenden Wissenschaftlern zu erhalten. Auf der Basis der Lektüre ihres Buchs „Die Errettung der modernen Seele“ stellt Illouz nicht nur ihre Thesen, sondern auch ihre, wie sie es nennt, empirischen Bricolagetechniken zur Diskussion. Der Tag endet mit einem öffentlichen Abendvortrag. Veranstaltungssprache ist Englisch.

Winfried Menninghaus ist Professor für Vergleichende Literaturwissenschaft an der Freien Universität Berlin. Seine Forschungsschwerpunkte sind u.a. Literatur und Poetik seit 1750 (mit besonderen Schwerpunkten auf der deutschen Romantik
und der Literatur des 20. Jahrhunderts) sowie die philosophische, evolutionäre und empirische Ästhetik.

Winfried Menninghaus ist seit 2002 Mitglied der Berlin-Brandenburgischen Akademie der Wissenschaft und war von 2007-2010 Sprecher des Exzellenzclusters „Languages of Emotion“ an der Freien Universität Berlin. Er war Gastprofessor an der Hebrew University of Jerusalem (1978-88), der Princeton University (2004), der Yale University (1994-2002), der University of California, Berkeley (1992) und der Rice University (2007). Vor kurzem erhielt er von der Società italiana d'Estetica den „Premio Internazionale d'Estetica“ für das Jahr 2012 zugesprochen.

Winfried Menninghaus wird am Mittwoch, 7. März 2012 im Rahmen von "A Day With ..." an der Zeppelin Universität sein. Er wird zwei Workshops leiten sowie einen öffentlichen Vortrag halten.

Lehrer und Kritiker der Rhetorik stimmen darin überein, sie als eine machtvolle Kunst zu betrachten: Mittels oft geringfügiger Elaborierungen

Die Vorlesung präsentiert experimentelle Studien, die ausgewählte rhetorische Devisen auf ihre hypothetischen Effekte getestet haben. Sie

Nackte Haut und die Entstehung der visuellen Künste
Nach Darwin ist die menschliche nackte Haut unser kardinales Aussehens-"Ornament", entstanden aus "kapriziösen" ästhetischen Präferenzen im
Kontext sexueller Wahl. Die Vorlesung präsentiert Argumente und experimentelle Daten zugunsten dieser Hypothese. Die Tendenz der neueren
Evolutionsbiologie, auch ästhetisch bevorzugte Merkmale ganz auf Fitnessvorteile kraft natürlicher Selektion zu reduzieren, wird damit in Frage
gestellt.
Die Vorlesung vertritt des weiteren die Hypothese, dass die Entwicklung zur nackten Haut zugleich die Entstehung ästhetischer "Imagination" und
der visuellen Künste begünstigt hat.

Ästhetische Lust an negativen Emotionen
Seit der Aristotelischen Tragödientheorie gelten ästhetische Lust und negative Emotionen als vereinbar.
Der Vortrag präsentiert experimentelle Untersuchungen zu einzelnen Faktoren dieses Phänomens und zu ihrer Interaktion. Er skizziert dabei – im
Ausgang von der klassischen Rhetorik und Ästhetik des movere – auch eine linguistisch und emotionspsychologisch fundierte Analyse des Gefühls
des "Bewegtseins".

In a first meaning, compositionism could stand as an alternative to critique (I don’t mean a critique of critique but a reuse of critique; not an even more critical critique but rather critique sold second hand —if I dare say— and put to different use).

Even though the word “composition” is a bit too long and windy, what is nice is that it underlines that things have to be put together (Latin componere) while retaining their heterogeneity. Also, it is connected with composure; it has a clear root in art, painting, music, theater, dance, and thus is associated with choreography and scenography; it is not too far from “compromise” and “compromising” retaining with it a certain diplomatic and prudential flavor. (…) Above all, a composition can fail and thus retain what is most important in the notion of constructivism (a label which I could have used as well, had it not been already taken by art history). It thus draws attention away from the irrelevant difference between what is constructed and what is not constructed, toward the composed. What is to be composed may, at any point, be decomposed. In other words, compositionism takes up the task of searching for universality but without believing that this universality is already there, waiting to be unveiled and discovered.

Could Compositionism be another way to establish a connection betweet Art and Politics? Reflexions around the Making Things Public exhibition, the creation of the School of Political Arts at Sciences Po and the Compositionist Manifesto.

Professor Bruno Latour, geb. 1947, ist Anthropologe, Wissenschaftssoziologe , Begründer der soziologischen Actor-Network-Theory und Ausstellungsmacher (Iconoclash, ZKM Karlsruhe, 2002, und Making Things Public: Atmospheres of Democracy, ZKM Karlsruhe, 2005).
