How does US diplomacy work beyond party politics? Norman Thatcher Scharpf, Consul General of the US Consulate in Frankfurt, told us in a CIP talk at ZU. And that he believes that cooperation is often the solution.
In the midst of the current difficult war situation in Ukraine, the US Consul General nevertheless conveyed a positive outlook. "I am confident that Ukraine will be in a better position to shape its future," he emphasized, underlining the need for continuous reforms on the road to Western democracy.
His statements reflected not only optimism, but also a deep conviction that Ukraine has a crucial role to play in the global political landscape. "Putin's attack was aimed at dividing us, weakening NATO and destabilizing the West," Thatcher stated emphatically.
The last event of the Club of International Politics in the spring semester 2024 offered participants an impressive encounter with Norman Thatcher Scharpf, Consul General at the US Consulate General in Frankfurt since August 2021. In an open Q&A session moderated by Ferhat Cicek, Thatcher answered questions from an international audience.

Scharpf began his speech with a short, concise keynote in which he not only highlighted the situation in Ukraine, but also emphasized the USA's commitment to the Middle East. He emphasized the importance of humanitarian aid and the need to protect the Palestinians. In his view, the diverse global challenges - from the climate crisis to migration and new technologies - call for greater international cooperation. "We need to work together and use shared values to find solutions to these problems," warned Scharpf.
In a particularly vividly described part of his speech, Scharpf shared personal experiences from his 28-year career in Europe. "We have never looked back and have always stayed in Europe," he said. He got to know the work of a professional diplomat during a stay in Panama.

When asked by an audience member what he thought of the upcoming US presidential elections, the Consul General turned the tables and asked the audience: "Who is voting on June 9?" After a hesitant raising of some hands in the room, the Consul General took the opportunity to make an urgent appeal to those present. He emphasized the immense importance of exercising their right to vote, especially in view of the upcoming European elections.
The Q&A session covered a wide range of current political issues. He was particularly critical of the division within the Democratic and Republican parties in the US, noting that both parties must find ways to unite in order to be successful. "My commitment is to the long-term interests of the American people," explained Scharpf, who described himself as non-partisan.

Scharpf's optimistic message of tackling the future together and overcoming challenges together was an inspiring conclusion to his speech: "I am hopeful that our countries will stand together. I would like to encourage us all to tackle the challenges ahead together."
This event once again demonstrated the importance of dialog and cooperation. The entire talk was held in English, which is why Norman Thatcher Scharpf's quotes were translated for this article. With his calm manner, the Consul General conveyed a deep understanding of how crucial international cooperation is to successfully tackle the global challenges of our time.
